Changing Law Firms
Why Change Law Firms?
Over a lawyer’s career there often comes a time when it is best to leave one law firm and join another law firm. There are many reasons; incompatibility with the current law firm’s policies, philosophy or the attorneys’ personalities, lack of opportunity for professional growth and career advancement, desire to practice law in an area not supported by the firm or the need for greater income. Whatever the reason, the wise attorney, whether an equity partner, income partner or an associate, will plan the transition carefully.
Tips:
1. Take your time. You do not want too many job changes on your resume. Be sure of what you are getting into. What is said in order to bring a highly desired attorney to the law firm and the reality of practicing at the firm can be quite different.
2. Know who knows who. Be cautious in who you confide in about your interest in leaving your current law firm. Make inquires discreetly. Use an intermediary if necessary to keep your identity confidential.
3. Be sure a change of law firms will further your career goals. Would the change be a side step or a step forward? Take the long view.
